Meet Nora Daidone, Founder of Nice Plume

Nice Plume is a calligraphy and illustration studio established by Nora Daidone in 2009, which makes bespoke creations for individuals and corporate clients. The studio designs personalised hand-crafted stationery, with the greatest attention to detail, for stylish weddings and offers a high-end service for prestigious companies and exceptional events.

Nice Plume est un atelier de calligraphie et d’illustration crée par Nora Daidone en 2009 qui propose uniquement du sur-mesure pour les particuliers et les professionnels. L’atelier imagine une papeterie personnalisée faite entièrement à la main, avec la plus grande attention, pour des mariages raffinés et un service haut de gamme pour les grandes maisons et les événements d’exception.

What made you want to start Nice Plume ? // Comment avez-vous debuté l’aventure de Nice Plume ?

Seven years ago during my training in latin and ancient calligraphy, first in Paris by a Master Calligrapher Claude Mediavilla for one year, followed by two years of training at la Villa Thiole, the oldest art school in Nice.

Il y a 7 ans, après m’être formée aux calligraphies latines et historiques, d’abord à Paris auprès d’un Maître Calligraphe, Claude Mediavilla, pendant 1 an, et ensuite, après 2 ans de formation à la Villa Thiole, plus ancienne école d’Art de Nice.

What materials and tools do you use? // Avec quels outils et materiaux travaillez-vous ?

It’s a question of inspiration and adapting myself to a particular theme and the materials I use. I like working with different materials and don’t necessarily only stick to using paper, I like raw materials, fabrics, and writing on a variety of unconventional materials (zinc, leather, glass, slate, pebble, copper, wood, plants...). I therefore use the writing tools that are best suited to these materials such as: feathers, pens, vintage plumes which I source from an artisan in the US, felt tip pens, paintbrushes...gouache, watercolours, acrylic...

Tout est une question d’inspiration et d’adaptation à un thème et aux matériaux utilisés. J’aime travailler sur plusieurs supports, je ne privilégie pas toujours le papier, mais aime les matériaux bruts, les tissus, et écrire sur des supports auxquels on ne pense pas forcément (zinc, cuir, verre, ardoise, galet, cuivre, bois, végétal…). Ainsi, j’utilise l’outil scripteur le plus adapté au support : plumes, stylos plumes vintage que j’achète chez un artisan aux USA, feutres, pinceaux… gouaches, aquarelles, acrylique…

Can you tell me about your creative process when working on a project? // Pourriez-vous m’expliquer votre processus créatif ?

I start off with a theme... a detail, a colour or a material and my creative process is triggered naturally.  I try to find a material which corresponds the best with the brief or event I’m working on. I like to get an insight into the needs and personal story of my clients, which enables me to convey their emotions via my writing and illustrations.

Je pars d’une thématique… d’un detail, d’une couleur ou d’une matière, et le processus de création s’enclanche naturellement. J’essaye de trouver le support qui correspond le plus à l’évènement pour lequel je vais écrire.  A l’écoute des envies et de l’histoire personnelle de mes clients, j’ai à coeur de transmettre leurs émotions à travers mes écritures et mes illustrations.

In what ways does the natural beauty and terroir of the French Riviera inspire your work? // Comment la nature, le terroir et la beauté de la Côte d’Azur inspirent votre travail ?

The Côte d’Azur is a place which is so rich in contrasts,  it’s spectacular light and colours and its authenticity resonates with me and inspired me when I created my organic calligraphy. That’s why it’s free, imperfect, emotional, like the natural elements of my home...the organic calligraphy, which I have developed has become my DNA, it’s a style of writing which is full of energy, which develops like a rhythm and provokes an emotional reaction in those who see it. I’m deeply attached to this region; I chose the name ‘Nice Plume’ because it’s a homage to my town as well as being a reference to the lovely ‘nice’ writing created by my plume.

La Côte d’Azur est une terre riche de contrastes, à la lumière et aux couleurs très particulières, son authenticité me parle et m’a inspirée quand j’ai créé ma calligraphie organique. Justement parce qu’elle est libre, imparfaite, émotionnelle, comme les éléments naturels de ma région le sont… : la calligraphie organique que j’ai développée, et qui est devenue mon ADN,  est une écriture toute en énergie, qui se développe comme un rythme, conférant un apport émotionnel particulier pour celui qui la regarde. Profondément attachée à ma région, le nom de “Nice Plume” que j’ai choisi, est un hommage à ma ville, et aussi un clin d’oeil au double sens de la jolie “nice” écriture par la plume.
